Reggae Harmony and Musicianship
Basic Exploration of the concepts of tonal harmony as they apply to Reggae Music including: major and minor key intervals, diatonic major and minor key harmony, Modal harmony, triads, 6th and 7th chords, vamps/chord scales, basics of chart reading and music notation. Building ear training skills through singing and rhythmic performance studies. Study and analysis of Classic Reggae Riddims.

Improvisation
Students will learn concepts and approaches to soloing and improvisation over Reggae riddims performed by the Reggae School house band.

Songwriting
Discussion and demonstration of the concept of songwriting in the reggae style. Analysis and appreciation of Great Reggae Songs.

Nyabingi
Students will learn the basic instruments and patterns of Nyabingi drumming and the spiritual connotations that go along with it. Students will learn and perform traditional Nyabingi chants.

Private Instruction
30 min private lesson on student’s primary instrument.
Course taught by all Reggae School Faculty

Reggae School Ensemble
Full band reggae ensemble led by Reggae School Faculty. Performance of the music of: Studio 1, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Joe Higgs, Burning Spear, Roots Radics, I-Grade and others. Class culminates in a public live performance and live studio recording.

Students perform a live studio recording of material from Reggae School ensemble

Reggae History and Culture
An in depth discussion of Reggae history and development from ska to the dancehall era. Explanation and I-lucidation of Reggae terminology and anecdotes. Viewing of unreleased footage and listening straight from Ras RoJAH’s reggae archive.

Vocal Lab
Focus on solo and group singing. Harmonies. Class will work in conjunction with Reggae School Ensemble to prepare for performance.
