GABRIEL A. JONES Born November 14 1984, Washington, DC born into a musical family, I began my love affair with music. I started to play drums at six years old, I would run to the drum set after church when the drummer vacated the set and attempted to teach my self different rhythmic patterns. Time went on and I received sporadic lessons. But it wasn’t until my parents moved to Gainesville, Florida that I found my identity as a drummer. In Gainesville, I was introduced to rock, funk, and R&B. But later I started college in Florida at the University of North Florida. This college was located in Jacksonville, Florida specially the beach. It was on Jacksonville Beach that I was introduced to The King’s Music and my life has never been the same since.
Struggling with the loss of my father, reggae became a comfort to me. The rasta community embraced me at this most difficult time. Additionally the rasta community has been the only community to embrace me musically. Next, I attended Berklee College of Music where I continued to play reggae music. My journey with reggae led me to the Bob Marley ensemble. It is the Bob Marley Ensemble that I met my future brother, William Lydgate. We soon got to know each other but at the time I don’t think either of us of what we were about to embark upon. Will invited to me to his home in Kaui where we conducted a reggae clinic. But one sunny day me and will sat at Lydgate Park and chatted. Out of this conversation came the birth of what we know now as the reggae school. I list this last as it is one of my most cheerful and meaningful involvements in life.
