Kirk Smart grew up playing guitar in Europe and moved to Hollywood in the early 80's to attend Musicians Institute, studying with Scott Henderson, Joe Pass and Robben Ford. Subsequent years were spent working as a musician in LA (clubs, casuals and recording)and overseas (Europe and South America).
Formed the successful "Kirk Smart Trio" with Sheldon Gomberg (Bass, played and recorded with Beck, Sly Stone, Warren Zevon, Kenny Wayne Shepard, etc...) and Rob Brill (Drums, played with Pete Droge, Berlin, etc...) |

He taught at Musician's Institute for many years (classes, private lessons and running the "Band Clinic" program).
Moved to Kauai in 2003, has since played with Donald Fagen, Taj Mahal, Todd Rundgren, Billy Childs, Michael Ruff (Chaka Khan, Rickie Lee Jones) Sashamon, as well many other talented local musicians. He is on recordings with Napali and Danny Paradise (with Sting, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell).
Kirk Smart plays guitar and lap steel and believes that an evolving understanding of music is necessary for anyone who aspires to call themselves a musician. A balance of "feel" and intellectual understanding is the ideal we strive for.
He has been interested in Reggae music since he first heard "Natty Dread" under questionable circumstances in London (1970's)!
Kirk currently divides his time between Kauai and Italy where he plays with the crack band IRS(Italian Rhythm Section), where he recently backed up Jason Mraz on his Italian tour. |
